Aeneid (Bilingual, Annotated, and Illustrated Edition)

Our review

The Aeneid is that literary classic everyone should read once in their lifetime. Like Homer's two works, it takes us on endless adventures, but in this case from the Latin rather than the Greek perspective, written by the famous Virgil.

The Trojans' journey to their settlement in Italy led by Aeneas is the main theme of the work. A book written in hendecasyllabic verses, but which we found to be a truly entertaining and interesting story from a historical and cultural point of view. It tells us not only about the Roman Empire but also about its society and deities.

Furthermore, this edition is truly a spectacle. It includes beautiful illustrations that help with the narration, its Latin version highlighted in blue to compare with the Spanish translation, annotations in the margins, and a fabulous prologue. It has it all!

Synopsis

After the fall of Troy, the Trojan hero Aeneas, guided by destiny, undertakes a long and dangerous journey to found a new homeland in Italy. Pursued by the wrath of the goddess Juno, Aeneas must face storms, monsters, and wars, in addition to overcoming the tragic love story with Queen Dido in Carthage. It is the odyssey of the man who, burdened with the weight of his past, is destined to become the father of the Roman people.

About the author

Publius Vergilius Maro (70 BC - 19 BC) was the most important poet of ancient Rome. Born near Mantua, he lived during the rise to power of Emperor Augustus, of whom he was a friend and protégé. His magnum opus, the Aeneid, was commissioned by the emperor himself to create a national epic that linked the origins of Rome with the heroic Trojan tradition. Virgil was an absolute perfectionist and, after ten years of work, considered the work unfinished. On his deathbed, he asked for it to be burned, but Emperor Augustus prevented it, publishing it and bequeathing it to posterity.
