Story of a Stairway (ages 14+)

Story of a Stairway (ages 14+)

Our review

The play "Historia de una escalera" (Story of a Stairway) is an X-ray of a stagnant Spain, narrated through three generations who go up and down the same steps without ever getting anywhere.

Buero Vallejo's mastery lies in his ability to transform an everyday architectural element, such as a staircase, into a suffocating symbol of the passage of time and lost illusions.

This reading still seems relevant to us, as it develops the eternal conflict between youthful dreams and the mediocrity of reality.

🏆 LOPE DE VEGA AWARD (1949)

💡 Reading tip: Although it is a short play, we recommend paying special attention to the initial stage directions of each act. Buero uses the physical deterioration of the staircase to narrate what the characters do not say. It is ideal to read in one sitting and then reflect on the weight of family inheritance.

Synopsis

On the landing of a humble neighborhood building, the lives, loves, and frustrations of several families intersect over thirty years. From the passionate and frustrated love of Fernando and Carmina to the resentment of their descendants, the staircase is the only silent witness that remains unchanged. Buero Vallejo constructs an existentialist drama where social determinism and lack of will condemn its protagonists to repeat the mistakes of their parents.
