Ivanov. The Seagull. Uncle Vanya

Ivanov. The Seagull. Uncle Vanya

Our review

These are plays that are easy to read and very different from what we are used to. You might find the character names a bit challenging if you're not familiar with Russian, but other than that, it's a must-have for theater lovers.

If you want to read something different, we recommend this work by Chekhov, which includes three of his great plays: Ivanov, The Seagull, and Uncle Vanya. They share common themes such as unrequited love or rural life, but if there's one thing that characterizes this author, it's deep reflection.

A classic you should have at home. That way, you'll enjoy the performances much more once you've read the text.

Synopsis

This volume includes three tragicomedies in four acts:

  • Ivanov: A drama with a multitude of characters, romantic entanglements, and money problems where the ending will surprise you.

  • The Seagull: One of his most famous works. It deals with unrequited love and art in a rural setting. The arrival of a dead seagull unleashes tragedy.

  • Uncle Vanya: Rural life, money, health, and happiness are the key themes in this work where a married couple seeks tranquility, but finding it will be anything but easy.

About the Author

Anton Chekhov (Russian Empire, 1860 - Germany, 1904) was not only a playwright and short story writer but also a doctor. His father was despotic, which made Chekhov a lover of freedom in adulthood. His first great work, The Seagull (1896), was initially unsuccessful but gained fame when it was performed two years later. He died very young, at 44, from tuberculosis.
