The Cynical Gaze. Epigrams and Aphorisms.

The Cynical Gaze. Epigrams and Aphorisms.

Our review

These small philosophical books have been a great discovery for us. They are literary gems that you can own for a low price and in a small edition to take with you anywhere. In Ambrose Bierce's case, we were struck by his personality and his outlook on life. His direct message leaves no stone unturned. He is, without a doubt, the master of cynicism.

The Cynic's Gaze is an essential anthology that brings together the most incisive and perceptive of his work. This small volume includes gems such as "Epigrams of a Cynic," "Cobwebs of an Empty Skull," "Immortality," "The Right to Work," and "A Mad World."

Bierce dissects human pretensions, politics, religion, and morality with a sharp pen whose criticism remains surprisingly relevant today. If you're looking for a read that will make you think, laugh sarcastically, and question the established order, "The Cynic's Gaze" is your book and Ambrose Bierce, your author.

Synopsis

A collection that encapsulates the essence of Ambrose Bierce's genius. The book opens with "Epigrams of a Cynic," a compendium of biting aphorisms that disarm social conventions. In "Cobwebs of an Empty Skull," he explores the darkest corners of the mind. The collection continues with "Immortality," a text that challenges our notions of eternal life, and culminates with "The Right to Work" and "A Mad World," pieces where he displays his sharpest social criticism. Throughout these pages, Bierce invites us to see the world through his own eyes: a skeptical, intelligent, and deeply human gaze.

About the Author

Ambrose Bierce (Ohio, 1842) was an influential American writer and journalist, famous for his horror short stories and satirical prose. He actively participated in the American Civil War, an experience that marked his work with brutal realism and a pessimistic view of human nature. He is known for his iconic "The Devil's Dictionary," a masterpiece of satire. Bierce's life ended in mystery; in 1913 he traveled to Mexico to observe the Mexican Revolution and disappeared without a trace, becoming one of the greatest enigmas in American literature.
