The Woman in White

The Woman in White

Our review

They say that The Woman in White was the first real bestseller in history. When it was serialized in 1860, people queued endlessly in London and gambled in pubs about what would happen in the next chapter. Reading it today, a century and a half later, you perfectly understand that fever: it's impossible to put down.

Wilkie Collins weaves such a clever plot that it makes you feel part of the investigation. It all begins with a masterful scene: a nocturnal encounter on a lonely road with a woman dressed in white who seems to be fleeing an unjust confinement. From there, we enter a spiral of identity theft, Victorian asylums, and stolen inheritances.

But what really draws you in is not just the mystery, it's Marian Halcombe and Count Fosco. She is one of the most intelligent, strong, and charismatic heroines in literature (nothing like the typical damsel in distress), and he... well, he is possibly the most charming and dangerous villain you will ever face.

📖This Alianza edition is a delight because it respects the vibrant rhythm of the original. If you're looking for that big book that makes you forget you have a phone, look no further. This is it.

Synopsis

Walter Hartright, a young drawing teacher, is walking back to London in the middle of the night when he stumbles upon a mysterious woman dressed entirely in white, in a state of panic and confusion. After helping her escape, Walter discovers that she has fled an asylum.

Shortly after, Walter travels to Limmeridge House to teach two sisters: the beautiful Laura Fairlie and her stepsister, the determined Marian Halcombe. There, Walter notices an unsettling resemblance between Laura and the mysterious woman in white.

About the author

Wilkie Collins (London, 1824-1889) was a close friend and collaborator of Charles Dickens. Together they revolutionized Victorian literature, but Collins shone brightly on his own by laying the foundations of what we now know as the mystery and detective novel. His masterpieces, The Woman in White and The Moonstone, are still considered the pinnacle of the intrigue genre.
