The peninsula of empty houses

The peninsula of empty houses

Our review

The Peninsula of Empty Houses reminds us that magical realism, a style made famous by masters like Gabriel García Márquez, can also emerge in Spain. It is a surprising and peculiar novel that every reader should undoubtedly experience. What we like most is that it doesn't solely focus on historical weight, but rather on the symbolic, through magical elements that add a touch of fantasy to the harsh history of a divided country.

Winner of the 2023 National Critics' Prize, this novel by David Uclés narrates the Spanish Civil War as never before. It is a hypnotic tale that masterfully blends the rawest realism with myth, superstition, and rural gothic terror, solidifying its place as a seminal work of contemporary literature.

Here, old healers possess more power than rifles, soldiers get lost in enchanted forests, and the fear of the living is as great as the dread of the dead. If you're looking for a demanding read with great literary quality, one that will captivate and shake you, this critically acclaimed novel is an experience not to be missed.
