The Burnout Society

The Burnout Society

Our review

We live in the age of "you can do anything," "if you want it, you can achieve it," and endless to-do lists. The result is that we are exhausted. The Burnout Society is not a self-help book that will tell you how to better organize your time; it is a brilliant (and surprisingly brief) philosophical essay that delivers a dose of reality and explains why you feel this way.

Byung-Chul Han puts forth an idea: we no longer need tyrannical bosses to exploit us, because we have learned to exploit ourselves voluntarily, believing that we are fulfilling ourselves. This reading is a slap of reality. It helps you understand the current epidemic of stress, anxiety, and the constant need to be productive even in our free time.

It's a small book in size but giant in ideas. Perfect for reading with a pencil in hand, highlighting half of its pages, and then pausing to breathe and learn to do nothing. Literally, nothing.

Synopsis

In the past, society was governed by discipline and "duty." Today, we live in the performance society and "can do." Philosopher Byung-Chul Han analyzes how this toxic positivity and overstimulation have led us to a state of chronic exhaustion. Hyperactivity, excessive self-demand, and the fear of not being productive enough are generating new pathologies such as depression, attention deficit, or burnout syndrome. A lucid and necessary essay to understand the malaise of our time and reclaim the value of boredom and contemplation.
