Bécquer's Legends (Ages 14+)

Bécquer's Legends (Ages 14+)

Our Review

If you think Bécquer is only "romantic poetry," prepare yourself. The Legends are another story: they are dark, unsettling, and wonderfully atmospheric. Bécquer was our very own Edgar Allan Poe, capable of turning an old Sorian ruin or a ray of moonlight into a fascinating nightmare.

This Cátedra edition (the one with the familiar black cover) is the jewel in the crown. Why? Because Bécquer fills his texts with references to history, art, and folklore that, without the footnotes in this edition, would be lost. Here you don't just read the story; you understand the context, the architecture, and the superstition that surrounds it.

Reading El Monte de las Ánimas or Maese Pérez el organista in this edition is to feel a chill down your spine. It's the perfect book for stormy nights, for lovers of the gothic, and for those who seek literature in its purest and most refined state.

Synopsis

This volume compiles the prose narratives of Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, masterpieces of post-romanticism that blend the supernatural, the traditional, and the historical. From the Templar spirits of Soria to hypnotic eyes at the bottom of a fountain, Bécquer maps out a magical and mysterious Spain. His prose, laden with lyricism, transports us to Gothic cathedrals, abandoned convents, and misty landscapes where the impossible becomes real.

About the edition

The Letras Hispánicas de Cátedra collection is the absolute reference for students and bibliophiles. This edition features a very comprehensive introduction and an apparatus of notes that clarifies vocabulary, historical references, and variants of the original text.

About the author

Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (Seville, 1836 - Madrid, 1870) was born into a family of painters, but soon became an orphan and was marked by a melancholic sensibility. He moved to Madrid dreaming of literary glory, but found poverty, poorly paid journalism, and an illness (tuberculosis) that would end his life at 34.

Considered the great poet of Post-Romanticism, Bécquer left behind noisy and grandiose romanticism to seek an intimate, brief, and unadorned voice. His masterpieces, the Rimas and the Leyendas (published posthumously by his friends to help his widow and children), laid the foundations for all modern Spanish poetry. Today, he is, undeniably, the most widely read poet in Hispanic literature.
