Grimm's Fairy Tales as They Were Never Told (1812 Edition) (Annotated)

Grimm's Fairy Tales as They Were Never Told (1812 Edition) (Annotated)

Our Review

Forget everything you think you know about fairy tales. This isn't the Disney version, not even the one the Grimms themselves later published. For us, this book is a literary time machine that takes us back to the first and most brutal 1812 edition. These are the original tales: raw, violent, without easy morals, and at times, genuinely terrifying.

Did you think you knew Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, or Cinderella? Prepare for a surprise. This is the first Spanish translation of the legendary first edition of the tales. From the hand of the prestigious philologist Helena Cortés Gabaudan, this book rescues the original stories, much darker and stranger than those we were told as children.

We chose it because it is an act of brutal honesty. It's an opportunity to read the Grimms unfiltered, just as they were.

How is this different from other Grimm books? This La Oficina edition recovers the original text from 1812. In later editions (the ones we know today), the Grimms themselves softened the tales to make them more "family-friendly." Here you will find the raw stories: just as they were told by the fire, with all their cruelty and beauty intact.

Synopsis

This work is not just another anthology by the Brothers Grimm. It is a critical edition and direct translation of the first version of their Children's and Household Tales (1812). Readers will find the primal versions of iconic stories, often with more violent details and less polished plots than in later editions. The book, edited and annotated by Professor Helena Cortés, seeks to offer a reading experience as close as possible to that of the original readers, revealing the true nature of German folklore.

About the Authors

  • The Brothers Grimm: Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm (1886-1859) were two German philologists and scholars who dedicated their lives to researching mythology and popular tales. Their goal was not to write for children, but to collect and preserve German oral tradition.

  • Helena Cortés Gabaudan: She is a professor of German Philology at the University of Vigo and one of the most prestigious translators of German classics in Spain. Her work on this edition provides essential rigor and context for understanding the true dimension of these tales.
