Moby Dick (1930 Illustrations)

Our Review

Moby Dick is an ocean. It's much more than a simple adventure story with whales; it's a journey into the darkest depths of the human soul. It's the chronicle of an obsession as grand and terrible as the white leviathan itself.

"Call me Ishmael." With one of literature's most famous opening lines, begins Captain Ahab's and the Pequod crew's epic pursuit of Moby Dick on their voyage of vengeance across the seven seas. This is the struggle of man against nature, against his own demons, and against a silent god.

What we like most is its boundless ambition: it is at once an adventure novel, a treatise, and a philosophical poem. It is a demanding read, yes, but its reward is great. Furthermore, this Valdemar edition is perfect for experiencing this masterpiece, as it includes a detailed introduction to the book and the illustrations Rockwell Kent made for the 1930 edition.

Synopsis

Young sailor Ishmael embarks on the whaling ship Pequod, unaware that its captain, the tyrannical and charismatic Ahab, is not seeking to trade in whale oil. Ahab has a single, monomaniacal obsession: to hunt down and kill Moby Dick, the monstrous white whale that tore off his leg in a previous encounter. The crew is swept away by their captain's madness in a suicidal pursuit across the ocean.

About the Author

Herman Melville (New York, 1819-1891) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet. His own experiences as a sailor on merchant and whaling ships in the South Pacific profoundly influenced his work. Moby Dick (1851), today considered one of the greatest novels in history, was a commercial and critical failure in its time, leading to Melville's obscurity. He spent the last decades of his life working as a customs inspector, and his genius was not rediscovered until the 20th century.
