Walden Two

Walden Two

Our Review

Is it possible to design a perfect society? A place without crime, without poverty, and without unhappiness? And what would we be willing to sacrifice to achieve it?

B.F. Skinner, the father of radical behaviorism, puts aside essays and turns to the novel to show us that it is. Walden Two is not an action novel; it's a tour of a utopia. We follow a group of visitors exploring a community designed from scratch under the principles of "social engineering" and operant conditioning.

This book is pure dynamite. It is fascinating and terrifying in equal measure. It forces you to question the very nature of freedom. Is our current society "free," or are we conditioned by forces we don't see? Would planned conditioning that leads us to happiness be preferable?

It's a provocative, essential, and absolutely unforgettable read that will have you debating it long after you close its pages.

Synopsis

Walden Two describes a utopia where the happiness and well-being of its citizens are achieved through social engineering and the principles of behaviorism.

The novel chronicles the visit of a group of people, including Professor Burris, to this experimental community called Walden Two. There, they discover a society that has eliminated traditional social problems thanks to a system of labor credits, communal education, and complete environmental control to positively reinforce desired behaviors. Founded by the charismatic T.E. Frazier, the community challenges conventional ideas about family, politics, religion, and, above all, human freedom.

About the author

Burrhus Frederic Skinner (1904-1990) was an American psychologist, social philosopher, and inventor, and one of the most influential and controversial figures in 20th-century psychology. He is considered the father of radical behaviorism, a school of thought that argues that behavior (including thoughts and feelings) can be explained by an individual's history of rewards and punishments. His theories on operant conditioning (the "Skinner Box") revolutionized psychology and had a profound impact on education, therapy, and philosophy.
