Faust

Faust

Our review

We all know the myth: a man sells his soul to the devil. But reading Goethe's Faust is to discover that the story is much wilder, more philosophical, and more human than we've been told.

This is not a horror story; it is the drama of human dissatisfaction. Faust wants it all: to know everything, to feel everything, to experience everything. And Mephistopheles (probably the most charismatic, ironic, and intelligent devil in literary history) offers it to him.

The Penguin edition is fantastic because it includes both Part One (the love tragedy with Gretchen, more intimate and emotional) and Part Two (more symbolic, political, and fantastical). It is a dense read, yes, but fascinating. It's the perfect book for anyone who asks themselves "how far would I go to achieve my desires." Plus, it's bilingual. One page in German and the other in Spanish.

If you want the book with the award for the best Spanish translation and bilingual edition, check this one out.

Synopsis

Faust, a wise old man disillusioned by the limits of human science and religion, is on the verge of suicide. In his despair, he invokes spirits and attracts the attention of Mephistopheles, a demon with whom he signs a blood pact: the devil will serve him on earth and grant him all his wishes, but if Faust ever becomes so satisfied as to wish for time to stop ("Stay, moment, you are so beautiful!"), the devil will claim his soul.

From there begins a dizzying journey that explores love, magic, politics, redemption, and the eternal struggle between good and evil.

About the author

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) is the undisputed giant of German literature, comparable only to Shakespeare or Cervantes in influence. He was a novelist, dramatist, poet, and scientist. He dedicated almost his entire life to writing Faust: he began the work at 20 and finished it shortly before his death at 80, pouring into it all the wisdom of a lifetime.
